Tihi_profile_goodApologetics: Facing the Challenges of Churchless Spirituality (Tihomir Lazić)

>>Student ministry track and pastoral track<<

Is the church essential or non-essential for Christian identity? This workshop wrestles with some of the biggest challenges that accompany the growing trend of ‘churchless spirituality’. This individualistic trend — which is rapidly gaining momentum and popularity across different Christian denominations — took all traditional churches by surprise and found them ill-equipped to deal with it. It involves does who left communities of faith and yet remained believers. For them, belonging to the organised and institutionalized church is something that is optional or non-essential for Christian identity. In this workshop, Dr Tihomir Lazic follows four questions of Osmer’s method to address the burning issues and to propose fresh ways in which Christians can engage this phenomenon and use it as an opportunity to deepen, strengthen and achieve a more authentic expression of church’s relational nature (koinonia).

Dr Tihomir Lazić works as a Lecturer in Systematic Theology at Newbold College and as the Director of Public Campus Ministry (or Student Ministry) at the Trans-European Division of the Seventh-day Adventist church. He completed his doctorate in theology at the University of Oxford.

Lazić lives in England and is married to Kärt Lazić from Estonia. The main drives that shape his vision of life and ministry are the sense of wonder and adventure that come from exploring the unknown and from the relentless quest to understand God and believers’ life in Him.

Adriana PCultivating Community through Worship (Adriana Perera)

>>iCOR track (value: Worshipping) and youth track<<

How is it that music can bring sports fans together and break up churches? Is there any biblical-based music formula to bring unity to our local congregations? In this workshop we will explore Scripture together and find relevant ways to cultivate a creative community through Spirit-led worship. Practical musical examples will be shared and analyzed.

Adriana Perera serves as a professor of Music Theory and Composition at Andrews University, where she is also the chair of the Department of Music. Adriana has published two books on the topic of music and worship: “En espíritu y en verdad” (Pacific Press, 2013); and “More than Music: Worship” (Biblio Publishing, 2017). The main purpose of her ministry is to promote the organization of quality music ministries in local churches and the production of music materials that make an impact on society, sharing the message of Jesus with everyone.

Tihi_profile_goodFifty Shades of Ethics: How to Deal with Tough Questions? (Tihomir Lazić)

>>Student ministry and pastoral tracks<<

This workshop seeks to equip the leaders for responding to some of the most challenging intellectual, spiritual, societal and ethical questions that the youth (and especially students) encounter when trying to understand and share their faith in a secular context. Tihomir Lazic will propose a foundational conceptual framework for dealing with some ‘grey-zone’ ethical questions that require higher and more complex reasoning processes than simply retreating to ready-made, black-and-white, proof-text answers. What do we do when the Bible is silent on certain issues? What do we do when we are dealing with questions that are so remote from anything the scriptural authors and our predecessors ever thought about? While taking the concrete case study of the issue of premarital sex as an example, the workshop will explore different conceptual tools, factors and principles that those striving to develop a mature Christian mind need to be aware of.

Foto Noemi copiaFostering Bible-Believer Scientists (Noemí Durán)

>>Pastoral, youth and student ministry tracks<<

Science and religion are often seen as oposite and incompatible. In the Adventist church, some people consider science dangerous and leading to the loss of faith, so students are sometimes advised against pursuing science careers. This is wrong. Nature is the second book of God and studying it properly leads to a better understanding of our Creator, his wisdom, and his love for all his creatures. In the mist of an atheistic materialistic society our church needs Bible-believer scientists, today more than ever. In this workshop we will learn how to foster scientific vocations among our children and youth.

Noemí Durán is the director of the European branch office of the Geoscience Research Institute. Biologist by training and vocational educator, Noemí loves studying nature, especially animal behavior, and sharing her discoveries with others. For her doctoral research, Noemí studied sea turtles in a remote beach in Honduras, developing a strong passion for animal conservation. In her current position, she travels across Europe lecturing and teaching, not only about the belief on biblical creation, but also about our responsibility as creation stewards, to care for all God’s creatures that share our planet.

Dagmar DGirls4Christ and Young Women in Church (Dagmar Dorn)

>>Case study track<<

Engaging girls and young women in the life of the church is a priority of Women’s Ministries. You will find out why it is so important for them to have companionship in a homogenous group and what they want at this age. How can we as church help them to find a loving relationship to Jesus, promote biblical values and to communicate to them what a practical life with Christ is like? What is offered in different countries in the EUD?

Dagmar Dorn is the Women’s ministries director of the Inter-European Division of SDA. Her passion and profession are being a midwife. She loves traveling, hiking and reading and enjoys the company of people from different cultures.

Thomas GyurokaHow People Grow (Thomas Gyuroka)

>>iCOR track (value: teaching)<<

In this workshop, Thomas Gyuroka gives age-old keys to teaching and personal growth from Scripture with life applications that may be surprisingly different from what you have always thought or heard. Whether life is going well or whether you are struggling in some areas of your life, the insights you will gain in this workshop are essential to progressing spiritually, relationally, and emotionally. This workshop will show you why all growth is spiritual growth, and how you can experience such growth in ways you never thought possible.

Thomas Gyuroka is currently living with his wife in Austria’s beautiful capital Vienna where he pastors the Vienna Central Church together with a second smaller church. He has been a pastor for 28 years and enjoys helping people develop in all aspects of their lives. He is also an adjunct professor of Leadership at Andrews University, USA, and has a special interest in creating learning systems which have the potential of changing lives. Thomas holds an MA in Religion and a PhD in Leadership. His life motto is “Christ is my passion!”

How to be Happy in an Unhappy World (Dejan Stojkovic)

>>youth track<<

We all desire peace and contentment in our lives. But for all of our chasing after happiness, do we ever really achieve it? We think if we can get one step higher on the ladder, lose those last ten kilos, or find that one perfect person, then happiness will be ours for the taking. But the things of the world don’t offer lasting peace and contentment.

Dejan Stojkovic was born in Kragujevac, Serbia. He finished his primary and secondary education in post-communist Serbia, interrupted a few times with the ugliness of wars that struck this region. He came to England in 2001 to study theology and he completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at Newbold College. Here he started a student-led worship service ‘Experience’. Dejan has served as a youth pastor at Stanborough Park Church where he established the Parallel Service as an outreach and reclamation ministry for youth and young adults. Before being called to serve as British union youth director he was serving as a Director for Teen’s Ministry, AVS and Chaplaincy at the South England Conference. Dejan got married to Deana in 2010. Dejan’s mission in life is very simple and that is preparing young people for the second coming of Jesus.

Werner DManaging People is like Herding Cats (Werner Dullinger)

>>iCOR track (value: Leading) and pastoral track<<

Leading people is never an easy task and leading volunteers means an extra portion of challenges. Current findings from Organizational development will help us to figure out the basic principles of value-based leadership in the 21 century. Since leadership has also always to do with one’s own personality. We will discover which style fits best the person I am.

Werner Dullinger was born and raised in Lower Bavaria. He did his pastoral studies at the seminar Marienhoehe in Darmstadt, Germany. He holds an MA in Leadership from Andrews University (USA).
He served as Youth Director of the Central-Rheinish-Conference for almost 16 years, where he redesigned the youth organization and developed a strong Pathfinder program together. In 2007 he was called to be the CFO of the South German Union and since December 2015, he serves as its president.
Leading and motivating lay members—especially young people—has always been his passion in pastoral ministy. This is best be done by empowering them and handing them the keys to leading positions in the church.

Troy FMentoring: A Seismic Shift—Moving from a Fragile Succession Plan to All Hands on Deck Approach. (Troy Fitzgerald)

>>iCOR track (value: Mentoring)<<

We use to say “the older people have wisdom and the youth and the energy” but the fracturing of families and dis-connected relationships makes church interactions difficult. When we use metaphors like “passing the torch” or “handing the baton” or “giving up the wheel and let the you drive” are nice ideas—but it has problematic assumptions. Throughout the ages there is a beautiful connection between a learned craftsman and an apprentice. We have seen it in scripture and probably in our own experience as well—we

need an inter-generational commitment to each other. Mentoring is living together in community, cooperation, and work together in collaboration. Mentoring needs to shift from “how I can show you what I did” to “how can we move to this destination together.” Community is about common identity and mission and willingness to learn together. (When Jesus called disciples to follow— it means to follow alongside of me).

Troy Fitzgerald has worked as a pastor, evangelist, and Bible teacher. After serving in Michigan, he and his family moved to the Walla Walla University Church where he served as youth/young adult pastor for 20 years. Troy and Julia have two sons, Cameron—21 and Morgan—17.
Troy has a BA in theology from Southern Adventist University, a MA in education and a PhD in Leadership from Andrews University. He has authored various books for Christian living and spiritual growth: Discovering God’s Will,
Twenty Questions God Wants to Ask You, Live Like You Mean It, Forty Days Wild, and Out of the Shipyard.
He has also written resources for discipleship for all ages.
Recently, Troy has conducted research on young adults entitled: A Meaning Full Season of Life—the faith tasks of young adults. As a result of his research, there are a series of devotionals focusing on 5 major endeavors: Calling, Conviction, Compassion, Community, and Commitment.

Bert - 2018 - 1year4jesus-AssessmentMetaphors that Shape our Church Culture (Bert Seefeldt)

>>iCOR track<<

This workshop is a game that creates an experience. Neurobiology informs us that our thinking, feeling and acting is shaped by internal images that we have saved in our brain. They are the ideas and visions of who we are, what we see as desirable and what we would like to achieve (Gerald Hüther). In the same way this workshop assumes that our church culture is significantly influenced by the metaphers for the church that we have in our minds and creates an experience of howsuch images affect our church cultures. Are you ready for a culture shock?

Bert Seefeldt is a pastor born in Berlin. Since 2007, he works in the youth department, first at the conference level, and then at the union level (since 2012). He had the privilege of attending the MA in Youth Ministry program that started in 2003. Since then, he has been chasing the “one-eared Mickey Mouse” in youth ministry. For him, iCOR could be an effective remedy.

>>iCOR track (value: Participating)<<

Get to church. Late as usual, you miss Sabbath lesson. Stand. Sing. Kneel and pray. Sit. Listen to the preacher. Stand. Sing. Pray. Sing… again… Go home… Oh I forgot the piece of cake: young activities. Where is the place for young people at church? Actually, How can have a participative church where everyone (even those who are not members) can get involved? Is it possible? I go deeper, is it possible to participate in a process where every single person can think and express the church we want to be?

Jonathan Contero is a passionate follower of Jesus, a husband, a father, and a pastor in a secular focused church in Madrid, Spain.
He likes football, music, reading, spending time with people. Yeah, and, of course, playing Fortnite and Netflix…

>>Pastoral, youth and student ministry tracks<<

How true are scientific facts? Are scientific statements reliable? What makes science so powerful? In this workshop we will learn the secrets of scientific success and a practical approach to deal with controversial scientific conclusions. One hint: the difference between data and interpretation.

Noemí Durán is the director of the European branch office of the Geoscience Research Institute. Biologist by training and vocational educator, Noemí loves studying nature, especially animal behavior, and sharing her discoveries with others. IMG_9701Spiritual Abuse (Petko Bonev)

>>Pastoral and youth track<<

Why should we speak about spiritual abuse? What does it mean? Who are the offenders, and how they act? How to prevent spiritual abuse?

In this workshop we will go over the following items: 1. What does spiritual abuse mean? (Definition), 2. Who are the perpetrators? 3. Five characteristics that foster abusive behaviour, 4. The consequences of spiritual abuse, 5. Spiritual abuse: what can be done?

IMG_2053Starting from Zero (Cero Church Case Study) (Jonathan Contero)

>>Case study track<<

Have you ever thought inviting a friend to church? Have you even considered bringing a secular post-Christian friend to church? For some people that is simply impossible.

These questions were in our minds when we were to plant our church, CERO (Zero in English). So we decided to start from zero, building up a church for people who started with God from zero. A Secular oriented church is not only about modernizing music and decoration. It is all about language, message, attitude, discipleship, commitment, acceptance, community, passion. It is all about Jesus.

Jonathan Contero is a passionate follower of Jesus, a husband, a father, and a pastor in a secular focused church in Madrid, Spain.
He likes football, music, reading, spending time with people. Yeah, and, of course, playing Fortnite and Netflix…

Alex BrowneStudying the Bible with Friends (Alexandra Browne)

>>Student ministry track<<

Reading the Bible with your friends sounds terrifying, right? Let alone encouraging your youth to do it too. And anyway, that kind of stuff is only for pastors, not for your average young adult. That’s what I thought, too. Until I tried it.

Alexandra Browne is a Civil Servant living, working and worshipping in London.

winfried-vogel_2018_spTearing down Walls in our Minds (Winfried Vogel)

>>iCOR track (value: Reconciling)<<

When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 the walls in the minds of people on both sides remained and made it difficult to find a common understanding. This workshop focuses on the barriers in our thinking which impedes the spirit of communion in a given group or congregation. Emotional, religious and cultural differences often lead to ostracism and social exclusion. Workshop participants will work on finding practical solutions for overcoming prejudice and pious arrogance in social interactions. The dominant questions will be: How can we live and work together in a spirit of goodwill and tolerance while developing a resilient Adventist identity? How can we interact in the spirit of Jesus despite our differences? How can we create an atmosphere of goodwill towards all and everyone?

Winfried Vogel, M.Div., Th.D., is currently editor-producer for HOPE Channel (at the European Media Center in Alsbach, Germany. Before that he was lecturing in theology at different colleges in Europe.
Born and raised in Berlin, he is married to Gaby and a proud father of three sons.

JCMThe Adventist Youth as an Agent of Social Justice (João Martins)

>>Pastoral, youth, student ministry tracks<<

As disciples of Christ, we are called for the mission of restoring God’s image in humankind. When we look at our European Societies at the present, we can see that sin has created exactly the opposite in our fellow human beings. Injustice, suffering, distress, needs, human rights violations and destruction of nature are part of our daily reality. The biblical mandate is that the children of God should “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute” Prob. 31:8. The XXI Century Adventist Youth have a unique opportunity to positively influence the society with God’s work of restoration. This workshop will cover some reasons for the Adventist Youth to be active in the society and give some suggestions on how to lead our youth to be a positive influence in a practical matter.

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, João Martins is presently the Executive Director of ADRA Europe, after having served ADRA in Angola and Portugal. With a management background and a Masters in Applied Development Studies his motivation is to serve the Lord showing His love for Humanity. João has also a strong passion for Youth Ministries, having an experience of 25 year as a Youth leader in Portugal in all leadership roles. He is committed to see the Adventist Church as an agent of relief and justice to the disadvantaged individuals of this broken planet. He is married and father of a 12-year-old boy.

DSC_4241The “Signs of the Times” and the “Sign of the End” (Rolf Pöhler)

>>Pastoral and youth tracks<<

We are living in an increasingly uncertain and chaotic world. What do current events tell us about the nearness of Christ’s second coming? How can we accurately ‘read’ the signs of the times without sensationalism, speculations, and fake news about the end? A careful reading of Jesus’ end time sayings reveals surprising insights, especially for Adventists.

Rolf J. Pöhler is Professor of Systematic Theology at Friedensau Adventist University, Germany. He has authored several books and numerous articles, has lectured in various Adventist seminaries in Europe and has held seminars in many churches. He is married to Regine and father of two children and expecting his third grandchild. His hobbies are travelling and photography.

Turning your Church into a Center of Influence (Blagovest Petrov – Bulgaria)

>>Case study track<<

The number of the unchurched, secular people in Europe is getting higher and higher in the last years. At the same time many of them express their need of spirituality and belonging to community without being engaged to an institution. And the church has faced a big challenge in reaching young people.

In this workshop we will see some ideas how to transform our churches from places where we gather once per week into centers for positive influence. We will try to understand and realize the philosophy behind that influence and what results we could expect from that.

The presented information will be based on a case study.

Blagovest Petrov comes from Varna Bulgaria. He is a youth pastor, professional coach, and ultra-marathoner. As a pastor his passion is to present the incredible character of God through the words and life of Jesus. As a coach he loves listening and asking questions to touch the chord that starts the engine of people’s potential, creativity, and energy. As an ultra-marathoner he likes to challenge himself by building persistence, patience, and endurance.

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
